You have seen his work around the float center in the past. He has designed many of our textiles and displayed his Ghost Series prints, a body of work highlighting the growing abundance of littered and abandoned consumer and industry plastic waste in the ocean. This year he not only has a few sculptural wall pieces in our lounge but has donned our Float Conference main stage at the Cross Arena with a stunning backdrop. Welcome again our artist in residence, Carter Shappy.
Carter received his BFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland, ME, and now resides here as an active participant in the Maine arts community. Carter describes himself as a prolific, multiskilled, and meticulous visual artist. You may have seens his collaborations and exhibitions , with the Portland Museum of Art, Maine College of Art, T.D. Bank, Portland Public Library, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Foam Brewers, Austin Street Brewery, RWS Art Studios, Norway Savings Bank, Greenhut Galleries, Space Gallery, Gulf of Maine ECOARTS and more.
Carter says his practice is ‘inspired by his interests in natural phenomena, flora and fauna, perception, psychedelia and everyday, mundane experiences.’ You’ll find Carter’s work weaving between elements of painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Carter is available for commissioned works and he makes his art available as limited edition prints and wearables. You can check out his portfolio online at studioshappy.com
